A lot of commentators and reporters look at Huckabee as if a martian had just landed. I think this stems from the fact that inside the beltway religiosity is in short display. The East Coast (really the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast) and in particular urban areas within the East Coast typically regard religion as an almost purely private matter. For a large part of the country, Huckabee's social conservatism (heavy on the God talk) and economic populism is not out of the ordinary and in fact mainstream.
