- A ruling came down yesterday from the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals that could dramatically change the way judgeships work in Minnesota. Up until now, judicial candidates were placed on the ballot with no party affiliation, they were barred from political party activities, their campaign speeches were supposed to sidestep the politics du jour, and they were unable to solicit campaign donations. This tradition, which has allowed Minnesota to maintain a fair and independent judiciary, is no more. I certainly agree that judicial candidates are difficult to tell apart on the ballot when there are no party affiliations attached. Yet, will providing those party affiliations provide the same quality of candidates? Or will we end up like Texas?

- Nick Coleman writes about the Presidential Bird allegedly flipped by Bush at a recent press conference (photo at right is not from that conference, but you can see the video footage here). Or was it just a really long thumb?
- Joe Soucheray writes about taxpayer-subsidized Viagra for active-duty soldiers. And somehow relates it to Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart. Wild stuff.
- Fo' Real? headline of the day: Summer Orientation Gives Students a Glimpse of College Life. If your eyes haven't frosted over yet, they will after reading the article.
- Another article about Minneapolis mayoral candidate Peter McLaughlin. Oh, wait, I mean R.T. Rybak. No...McLaughlin. Hell, it doesn't matter who they're talking about. They're the same person.

The Nick Coleman-Bush thing is such a non-starter it's ridiculous. Coleman even links to a site that says that the press has unanimously agreed that it was a thumbs-up. Nice reporting, Nick Coleman. You have exactly one source that agrees with you, and instead of cross-checking you run with it. Way to be a party hack. For crying out loud, we don't want the Strib to become the liberal doppelganger of Fox News, do we? Let's actually try to be a little honest next time.
Don't forget, Nick is the brother of Chris Coleman...DFL-endorsed contender in the St. Paul mayoral election! What a wangled teb...
By the way, Archduke, did you get my e-mail?
"strib to become", it's already there. Add MinnesotaPoll to that list of Fox type liberal hacks. But I am in favor of hackery provided it is done with full disclosure.
I think Coleman's article more so points out how timid our current corporate media system is to say anything that is remotely embarrassing/controversial about the president, and the length that the press is willing to go to in order to protect him.
Anyone that watches the video closely can see that that is in no way “a thumbs up” (just count the knuckles on each side of the finger).
But with everything else going on in the world that could be looked at, this article seems rather pointless.
